Oral Health Inequities and Access to Care

AAPHD Dental Public Health Curriculum

The four- to six-hour course is designed to provide students with a foundational understanding of oral health inequities. The goal is to equip dental professionals with the knowledge and tools to address inequities in oral health access, coverage, and outcomes. It provides a comprehensive understanding of the factors contributing to oral health disparities and introduces dental delivery systems along with innovative workforce models to improve access to care.

Dental Public Health Competencies Addressed

Competency 3:

Demonstrate ethical decision-making in the practice of dental public health.

Competency 5:

Communicate on oral and public health issues.

Competency 6:

Lead collaborations on oral and public health issues.

Competency 8:

Critically appraise evidence to address oral health issues for individuals and populations.

 

Course Objectives

On successful completion of this course, students will be prepared to:

  • Identify and describe the principles of public health as it relates to oral health and the dental professional.
  • Describe the public health and dental public health achievements and barriers in the US.
  • Describe the oral health status and needs of the US population, including various age groups, underserved, and minority populations.
  • Describe the dental disease trends among various US populations.
  • Identify and explain determinants associated with health care access and utilization of dental care services.
  • Recognize the roles of public, private, professional and voluntary organizations in promoting oral health, and the delivery of dental health care services.
  • Describe and differentiate different oral health workforce models.
