June EDI Corner - Culturally Responsive Oral Health Care for LGBTQIA+ People

Celebrate Pride Month by committing to providing culturally responsive care to the LGBTQIA+ community!

Understanding Unique Oral Health Needs
The historical exclusion of LGBTQIA+ people has led to persistent healthcare inequities, with roughly 2/3 of LGTBTQIA+ adults reporting experiencing some level of discrimination during a recent healthcare visit. This can leave patients feeling unempowered, creating long-term stress and anxiety that impact future health visits.

LGBTQIA+ individuals may also face specific oral health challenges, including mental health disparities impacting oral hygiene; higher rates of tobacco and substance use, which can lead to oral cancer and periodontal disease; and changes from hormone replacement therapy (HRT) increasing the risk of dental caries and gum disease.

Survey Highlights Critical Gaps in Education and Training
Following a survey of oral health students and professionals, the American Institute of Dental Public Health (AIDPH) published a research brief revealing significant gaps in knowledge, experience, attitudes, and comfort levels among oral health professionals regarding LGBTQIA+ oral health issues. Notably, 77.2% of respondents felt their institution did not consider LGBTQIA+ issues a core aspect of clinical training. The findings highlight the need for improved education and training to ensure respectful, knowledgeable, and inclusive care.

Providing Culturally Responsive Care

Here are a few tips and resources to get started:

  • Begin by understanding LGBTQIA+ identities and terminology with the help of The National LGBTQIA+ Health Education Center glossary of terms.
  • Understand how implicit biases may influence your actions and decisions with AIDPH’s Cultural Responsiveness workbook.
  • Create a welcoming, visibly inclusive environment using this checklist.
  • Put advocacy into action with community engagement, policy efforts, and public education about the unique challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community.

By integrating this information into your work, you can play a pivotal role in advancing oral health equity for the LGBTQIA+ community!
